360 Environmental Attends Opening of Southern Seawater Desalination Plant and IDA World Congress…
Southern Seawater Desalination Plant Opens
360 Environmental staff attended the opening of the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant in Binningup in September. 360 Environmental’s involvement on the plant and integration assets included the original siting studies, contributing to the authoring of the PER approval documentation and Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC) referral, compliance auditing, long term Western Ringtail baseline and monitoring program, and the rehabilitation works at the Harvey Storage tanks.
The plant opening was followed by the International Desalination Association World Congress 2011 on Desalination and Water Reuse, which was held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Perth Australia. Themed, "Desalination: Sustainable Solutions for a Thirsty Planet" the Congress is the premier global event on desalination and water reuse. It was a chance to meet up with colleagues and also hold a Board meeting for the Peer Review Board for the IDA Journal on Water and Reuse.
The announcement was made (by Premier Colin Barnett 1/8/2011) that work will begin to double the capacity of the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant outside to provide water for the Integrated Water Supply Scheme near Harvey, approximately 30 kilometres inland. When the expanded plant is complete, at least half of the water needed for the Perth metropolitan area will be supplied from desalination, which has been in significant shift for Perth over the last decade.
The opening was a great chance to see the plant. The Water Corporation through the Southern SeaWater Alliance (SSWA) (Tecnicas Reunidas, Valoriza Agua, AJ Lucas, WorleyParsons) have done a great job and we were really proud to be part of this historic moment.
T-B: Michelle Rhodes and Tamara Smith at the Opening, Neil LaRoche, Gemma Whitfield and Mark Oliver.
