The development and implementation of effective rehabilitation strategies ensures rehabilitation works result in a sustainable, long-term land use that complies with all stakeholder expectations and requirements, providing a positive environmental outcome or a net environmental benefit.

Several industry-specific, leading-practice guidelines are available when developing a rehabilitation management strategy e.g. Environmental Protection Authority Guidance No 6 -  Assessment of Environmental Factors (in Accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1986) -  Rehabilitation of Terrestrial Ecosystems and the  Department of Industry, Resource and Tourism - Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry Series – Mine Rehabilitation.

360 Environmental and Rehabilitation

360 Environmental is able to address all aspects of rehabilitation practice from pre-disturbance to final relinquishment, including on ground works at any scale. 360 Environmental provides the following rehabilitation services to enable successful rehabilitation outcomes:

  • Project Environmental Management - baseline and feasibility studies - botanical surveys (including weeds and dieback), assessment of existing vegetation condition, research and review of information databases, soil capability surveys, fauna surveys and hydrological surveys.
  • Rehabilitation management systems – rehabilitation and revegetation design, strategies, management plans, guidelines, step-by-step procedures or specifications, action plans, knowledge capture, transfer and auditing.
  • Completion criteria – site specific indicators and criteria that are acceptable to all stakeholders.
  • Landform design – characterising, handling, shaping to meet natural contours.
  • Ecosystem reconstruction – site specific revegetation solutions, seed management (provenance correct species selection and collection, storage, viability and use), fauna habitat enhancement, flora and fauna monitoring, remedial solutions.
  • Management and reporting systems - implementation, supervision, and co-ordination, training and technical assistance.
  • Rehabilitation research – defining key questions from a practitioner perspective, prioritising research responses, experimental design, engaging research institutions.
  • Stakeholder engagement – including local communities, Government, non-government organisations and Traditional Owners. Two way communication to understand stakeholder preferences and to manage expectations.
  • Assessment and review – reporting systems, annual monitoring reports.

Project Profile

  • Harvey-Stirling Redevelopment Scheme, Environmental Offset, Vegetation Protection and Rehabilitation Management Plan - 238 hectare rehabilitation program. Key aspects of this project included:
    • management plan authoring for sign off by regulators and stakeholders
    • offset identification and  protection
    • catchment management
    • rehabilitation preparation (earthworks and weed control)
    • planting, seed spreading, fertiliser application
    • landscaping and automated irrigation tender and implementation process for the Harvey Dam landscaping below the embankment
    • monitoring and reporting
  • Bunbury Ocean Outfall Foredune Restoration and Rehabilitation - management plans (EMP) and implementation of the foredune restoration program (earthworks – foredune reconstruction, mulching, fencing and access control, seed spreading and seedling planting, monitoring and reporting).
  • Perth Seawater Desalination Plant and Integration Projects:
    • Restoration of pipeline routes after construction and A Class Reserve rehabilitation estoration of area between Thomsons and Kogolup lakes as an offset for the pipeline installation associated with the Perth Seawater Desalination Plant
    • Restoration of the foredune to the west of the Perth Seawater Desalination Plant in Kwinana
    • Managed Nicholson Road Pump Station landscaping and irrigation project for the pump station grounds and restoration of Conservation Category wetland at corner of Nicholson and Armadale roads, Armadale
