Contaminated Site Reclassification Precedent - Edith Cowan University
Edith Cowan University
As part of a project team that included Aria Projects, Pritchard Francis and Minter Ellison, 360 Environmental recently provided environmental advice to enable the reclassification of portions of the Edith Cowan University (ECU) Mount Lawley campus. The entire campus had previously been classified by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) as Contaminated – remediation required as a result of part of the site's historical use (pre 1920) as a landfill.
Using information contained in the environmental investigations and management plans prepared by 360 Environmental, ECU requested that the DEC classify the site in three separate portions, which was a first in WA under the current contaminated sites legislation.
Under the guidance of the 360 Environmental Remediation Action Plan, over 16,000 tonnes of material was excavated and removed to landfill and that portion of the site was reclassified as decontaminated. A large portion of the campus was reclassified as not contaminated – unrestricted use and the remainder of the site was classified remediated for restricted with the Site Management Plan prepared by 360 Environmental providing an ongoing management tool for this area.
