Perth Seawater Desalination Plant
Water Corporation
360 Environmental provided overall project environmental management on behalf of the Water Corporation for the award winning Perth Seawater Desalination Plant (PSDP), the largest in the southern hemisphere (at the time of building). At a peak capacity of 144ML/day, the PSDP was the first large scale desalination facility to be constructed in Australia and as such, was subject to intense scrutiny from both the public and government agencies. Major concerns included energy management and the management of seawater concentrate. With one of the most complex environmental approvals experienced in Western Australia for large scale infrastructure projects, the environmental studies undertaken successfully meet the strict requirements of the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority.
Communications
360 Environmental delivered over 150 technical presentations and tours of the PSDP to government and industry bodies as part of communications associated with desalination. 360 Environmental undertook extensive liaison with the community and representative bodies on behalf of the Client. This has contributed to understanding the need for large scale desalination in the context of climate change. Communications involved; reporting, presentations, brochures, websites, displays and advertisements.
Outcomes
360 Environmental has authored technical papers and presented at international conferences on leading edge environmental management for large-scale desalination facilities. Staff at 360 Environmental are members of the International Desalination Association and the Australian Water Association. Interstate advice has been sought from 360 Environmental staff, following the lead set in Western Australia. Advice has been given to various Environmental Protection Authorities and government departments, to understand the environmental aspects and options for mitigating the impacts associated with large scale desalination projects.
