Contaminated land is largely a symptom of a historical problem, often resulting from industrial, agricultural and mining activities, and the manufacture, use and disposal of chemicals. Public concern regarding the health risks associated with the redevelopment of land formerly used for waste disposal, industrial or commercial purposes, has triggered the introduction of the Contaminated Sites Act 2003 and related legislation to identify, manage and remediate contaminated land.
