Flora and Vegetation assessment in Western Australia is a key requirement of the planning and approvals process for new projects. Such planning typically begins several years ahead of a project, with a preliminary (Level 1) flora survey to broadly assess constraints and opportunities relating to a site. Depending on the findings of such a survey, sites at which a greater level of impact is identified, or sites at which more serious environmental constraints are present, will usually progress to a Level 2 (detailed) flora survey during the spring, at least two years in advance of any proposed development, in order to allow time for sensitive project design, acquisition of offsets and any Town Planning Act amendments and Environmental Approvals to be undertaken.
